The EV market can no longer be called small - manufacturers regularly present and launch new models..
GO TO-U has made a list of the TOP-9 best EV cars in 2022 (though there are actually 12 cars, as we have combined some models into one category and later you will see why).
Start of production: autumn 2021
We have placed these two cars in one category for a reason: their main feature is the Hyundai-Kia E-GMP platform. Firstly, it has created a huge space in the cabin combined with relatively compact dimensions. Secondly, 800-Volt charging architecture has been introduced (usually EVs have a 400-Volt system), due to which both cars can take a higher charging power from DC stations: a maximum of 350 kW for a battery charge of 0-80% in 18 minutes, plus 100 km of power reserve for 5 minutes of connection.
Another feature is an innovative cooling pump in both cars, which ensures that at an outside temperature of -7°C, the battery will retain up to 80% of its potential.
Both Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 are available in various modification – with one and two engines, two batteries to choose from. The power reserve varies from 400 to 500 km. At the same time, Kia also offers a sport version of the EV6 GT with a power of 600 hp (700 Nm). By the way, the most powerful Ionic makes 302 hp (605 Nm).
Start of production: autumn 2021
The R1T pickup truck is a product of the American startup Rivian Automotive, which was funded, in particular, by Ford and Amazon. The model has four electric motors and three versions of different power: from 408 to 765 hp. Also, this pickup truck has an adjustable air suspension, can change the road clearance and pull off fording in waters of up to one meter deep.
A special feature of Rivian is the Tank Turn system: using four engines at a time, it enables the pickup truck to make a U-turn in place.
Start of production: winter 2021
Yep, the honour of Hummer has been restored! Still, the company definitely keeps up with trends. Only general visual reference and spirit of these legendary SUVs throw back to old times. Everything else is all about innovation. Tick off your fingers: Hummer is now part of the GMC brand; Hummer is now a pickup truck; Hummer is now an EV. How do you like this, fans?
The car turned out to be very interesting: the body-on-frame design, 1000 hp motor in the Edition 1, 0-100 km/h acceleration in 3 seconds, an impressive power reserve of 644 km (taking into account a weight of almost 3.5 tons). Anyway, there are pretty a lot of functions like "crab mode", which enables the car to move diagonally.
Start of production: summer 2021
BMW iX is a luxury crossover with an extraordinary design. Moreover, this is the first BMW electric car built on a specialized platform and the first all-wheel drive EV manufactured by this brand. It is available in two versions: the initial BMW iX xDrive40 delivers a power output of 326 hp and 630 Nm of torque, the flagship BMW iX xDrive50 offers 523 hp and 765 Nm. The power reserve as well as the battery capacity also vary – 425 km (71 kWh) and 630 km (100 kWh) of WLTP range, respectively.
Start of production: autumn 2022
Iconic "7" model, now EV. It is built on the flexible BMW Cluster Architecture (CLAR) platform and, therefore, i7 can be assembled on the same production line as the ICE cars. The car offers pretty a lot of luxury features (Sky Lounge panoramic glass roof with LED light threads, 4-zone automatic climate control with individual temperature control in the foot area, heated steering wheel, automatic opening and closing doors, etc.). Its technical characteristics are surely on a proper level: 544 hp of power, 645 Nm of torque, 0-100 km/h acceleration in 4,5 seconds, 105 kWh of battery capacity, power reserve - 625 km (WLTP).
Start of production: second half of 2021
Top-end versions of Tesla's EV flagship Plaid have absolutely amazing characteristics. In total, three engines produce 1034 hp and 1227 Nm!
Due to this, the Model S liftback can accelerate up to 100 km/h in 2 seconds, and the Model X – in 2.5 seconds. The power reserve of the 100 kWh battery is also not bad – 628 and 547 km, respectively.
And both cars are available with "pilot wheel" instead of a steering wheel. So far, no other manufacturer offers this feature.
Start of production: autumn 2021
Lucid Air is the S-Class among top electric cars 2022. In addition to being premium quality in every detail, it also has impressive technical characteristics. As of mid 2022, the car lineup includes three models - Dream Edition Range, Dream Edition Performance and Grand Touring. The first one, as you might guess, is geared for the maximum power range, which is, by the way, 837 km. However, it has electric motors with a total power of "only" 933 hp. In the second case, the range is also impressive (758 km), but the engine power can reach up to 1111 hp.
As for Grand Touring, it can be considered basic. Its dual-motor powertrain produces up to 800 hp, accelerates up to 100 km/h in just 3 seconds and has power reserve of 830 km.
Besides, the Lucid Air is an EV with the largest power reserve in the world today.
Mercedes-Benz EQS / Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV
Start of production: spring 2021 (EQS), summer 2022 (EQS SUV)
These are Mercedes flagship electric cars. Both models are built on the same platform, have a similar style and stuffing. Basically, the EQS SUV is identical to EQS, though the former can be considered its more practical (and potentially more popular) version. It even has a 7-seat version!
The special features of these cars include a so-called Hyperscreen (a wall-to-wall front panel), electric adjustment of all seats available in the base version, Airmatic air suspension, etc.
Cars are available in different versions, i.e. with one and two motors, with batteries of different capacities.
In the top-end versions, the Mercedes-Benz EQS and Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV 580 4Matic have a powertrain output of 523 hp and 855 Nm and can travel up to 672 and 613 km on a single charge, respectively.
Start of production: spring 2022
For more than four decades, the Ford F-150 pickup truck has been considered the best EV vehicle in North America. In 2022, it finally has an electric version. A record low price is among its main advantages – the "base" version costs a bit less than 40 thousand dollars.
The F-150 Lightning is available in two versions: with a standard battery (432 hp, power reserve – 370 km) and an extended one (571 hp and 482 km). The torque is 1051 Nm in both versions. The flagship can accelerate from 0 to 96 km/h (60 mph) in just 4.4 seconds.
Since the pickup truck is a practical car, the engineers surely included the most essential features for its usability. The basic F-150 Lightning can carry up to 900 kg of cargo and pull a trailer weighing up to 3.5 tons (up to 2.3 without an optional package). The car with an enlarged battery can carry up to 840 kg and has a towing capacity of 4.5 tons.
The car features a Pro Power Onboard system with 120 V and 240 V sockets. It be used not only for power supply to external electric devices, but also for powering the house (for 3 days), as well as charging other electric cars.
